Meet The Winners: Australia’s Stellar South Asian Women Awards 2023

Sonya Suares, Jatinder Kaur, Sagina Walyat, Devni Wimalasena, Daizy Maan & Yesha Patel

Meet our Stellar South Asian Women 2023!

Nine winners were revealed from a shortlist of 40 finalists across the categories of Content Creator, Community & Advocacy, Business & Entrepreneurship, Sports & Fitness, Arts & Culture, STEM, Journalism & Literature, International (based overseas) and Global Impact (based in Australia). There was also a special mention for late entrepreneur and mental health advocate, Pyrawy Sivarajah.

Winners were chosen for the positive impact they have made through their work, being community orientated, and for their bravery and leadership skills. This year’s award theme #ItTakesAVillage celebrates not just the stellar women nominated but everyone who has helped them along the way.

And our community truly came together to make this year’s awards a stand-out success. We received over 90 nominations and our in-person awards ceremony, held at Queen Victoria Women’s Centre, Melbourne, on 29 November, was a sell-out.

South Asian women from across Australia – and beyond – gathered together, joined by allies, to recognise emerging and established brown creatives, activists, founders and leaders whose voices and work are a force of good. These included winners Sagina Walyat and Yesha Patel, who flew in from India and New Zealand respectively.

MC’d by actors Menik Gooneratne and Yasmin Kassim, the Awards featured a reading by Naarm-based poet Ibtisam Shahbaz and a keynote by Dr Amandeep Hansra, a practising GP and an expert in digital health and innovation, who was also part of the inspiring line-up of Awards judges alongside Amrit Gill, Creative Program Lead at City of Melbourne, and Chaman Sidhu, former Chief Legal Officer at Xero and now a non-executive director, advisor and legal and governance professional.

These awards aim to amplify the voices of change makers whilst also inspiring others to take action on their ideas of making the world around them a better place.

Remember, who & what we celebrate shapes the culture we build – this year’s event truly reflected that. So thank you to all of you that supported the 2023 Awards!
